This is one of my favorite directors, Robert Egger’s debut film. I was haunted for days after I watched this movie. The specific scene was haunting me for days. But I still remember the sheer thrill and horror I felt when watched this movie. Eggers’s debut is a masterpiece in storytelling.

PLOT: Puritan families leave their community because of religious disputes. They settle somewhere in the middle of a dense forest. Mysterious things start to happen to them. Like the disappearance of their newborn baby which followed a disturbing scene.

This movie has done excellent work in showing the fundamentals of religion and fear. We can say that this movie is more psychological than fear and terror.

There was a scene in the movie which I had to skip because of how dark it was. But I assure you, this movie is spot-on till the very end.

MOTHER (2017)

What a surreal movie it is. When this movie ended I was so uneasy that I had to watch Mr. Bean’s movie to remove the aftermath. Jennifer Lawrence (Mother) has done a remarkable job in this film. It is always very tough to watch Aronofsky movies but the thrill he offers is unparalleled.

PLOT

Mother and Him (Javier Bardem) dwell in a remote and deteriorating house. Their life starts to become canny as strange things start happening. You will understand the relationship between humans and the environment. There are also some controversial themes of this movie but this is what makes this movie great. The film leaves viewers with unanswered concerns and a sense of unease.

I was hearing my heartbeat while watching this masterpiece. I was constantly crossing my fingers at the tension building in this movie. Aronofsky makes you feel like this is the world you are living in and you are in the shoes of Nina. It is a must-watch movie.

Nina Sayers is a ballerina, talented but unstable. She represents the white Swan, innocent and elegant. But Black Swan enters her life. Black Swan is sensual and bold making her stronger over White Swan. The story progresses as Nina Sayer (White Swan) gets in touch with her darker side.

The film reveals Nina’s inner suffering as her mental state deteriorates. This is one of my favorite films with a female protagonist. You will find why the casting of this movie is so well-praised.

ROSEMARY’S BABY

Director: Roman Polanski

Cast: Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, John Cassavetes as Guy Woodhouse, Ruth Gordon as Minnie Castevet, Sidney Blackmer as Roman Castevet, Maurice Evans as Hutch, Ralph Bellamy as Dr. Sapirstein

Polanski excels in this kind of genre. He makes you believe this world is real and you are part of it. He makes you explore within the movie and after the movie ends, he compels you to explore inside of you. 

PLOT

Rosemary Woodhouse, a young woman moves into a New York City apartment with her husband. Strange neighbors surround this apartment. She starts feeling terror and alienation after becoming pregnant. Disturbing thoughts and paranoia start hitting her hard.

What I loved most about this movie was Rosemary’s performance. Her performance alone added much-needed tension to the movie. Also, the pacing of this movie is perfect.

The perfect mix of horror, pregnancy, and parenting. This movie is a must-watch.

US

The second venture of Jorden Peele is as good as his first one. I would even say that the maturity in storytelling and handling complex storytelling in this movie is more powerful than the first one. If you liked Get Out then just go and play this movie and be engrossed by its subtle messages, storytelling, and characters and its digs on pop culture and overall culture.

PLOT

Wilson’s family goes out to spend their vacation in California. One day their youngest son is almost lost while walking without consciousness. After this incident Mother Adelaide becomes protective. But the same night groups of four people come and break into their houses. These people look exactly like them but with distorted appearances.

When I reached the end of this movie, the plot was spinning in my head. For some minutes you won’t be able to stop thinking about what happened.

THE STEPFORD WIVES

THE STEPFORD WIVES is one of the most ingenious and well-crafted movies that has ever graced the screen. It is a satirical psychological horror that critiques the social class and gender roles. It is even an inspiration for Get Out as mentioned by Peele.

I was scratching my head for the whole runtime of this movie. The unreliable narrative, the twists and turns, and the shocking revelations make you speechless and hooked till the end of the movie. Martin Scorsese challenges you to understand the movie, and what Shutter Island means. Let me give a fun fact. The movie’s name is an anagram of Truths/Denials or Truth/Lies

PLOT

It follows Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two United States Marshals. They investigate a patient who disappeared from a mental facility on Shutter Island. It leads to a revelation about the institution’s true purpose and Teddy’s past. The film explores concepts such as reality, perception, and the human psyche.

Stanley Kubrick adopting the work of the great writer Stephen King should only compel any movie to watch this movie. If this does not compel you then I would say that there are various easter eggs in this movie on the Get Out. First watch Get Out and explore the movie and then you will know the inspirations and various references.

Before you go and watch it let me tell you one thing. I could not watch this movie at first. I was so scared I had to sleep with the lights on.

PLOT

Jack Torrance is a penniless writer. Along with his wife and little son, they become the caretaker of the ominous Overlook Hotel. Isolated by a snowfall, the family soon discovers that the hotel has secrets. Jack becomes mentally weaker. The hotel’s scary spirits taunt him.

This should be one of Kubrick’s best movies. If you leave alone then I would recommend you call someone after watching this movie. Don’t pee on your pants, and I am serious when I am saying this.

AMERICAN PSYCHO

Cast: Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, Willem Dafoe as Detective Donald Kimball, Jared Leto as Paul Allen, Reese Witherspoon as Evelyn Williams, Samantha Mathis as Courtney Rawlinson, Chloë Sevigny as Jean, Justin Theroux as Timothy Bryce

I would like to thank Christian Bale for doing this movie with such amazing acting. This is one of my favorite movies. It explores various underlying societal norms, competition consumerism, and cooperative life. But the imaginative storytelling with unreliable narrative will hook you and confuse you and let you explore the world of American Psycho for yourself.

To talk about this movie without calling it a masterpiece would be an insult. You should ask if Christian Bale should play the next Joker, after watching it.

PLOT

Patrick Bateman, a rich investment banker in Manhattan. He is a psychopath who hides his tendencies from his co-workers. Christian Bale’s portrayal of Bateman is both scary and compelling. This dark comedy compels you to think about various aspects of society, life, and our success.

BIRD BOX

Bird Box is a well-done science fiction thriller with great characters and drama packed with immersive storytelling, and thrilling actions. It’s a great watch for you if you live Get out.

Mysterious supernatural entities drive people to madness and suicide. The film follows Malorie, who must navigate this dangerous new reality while blindfolded. Why blindfolded you ask? Well if anyone saw these creatures, they are dead. isn’t that interesting?

When the film came on Netflix, it sparked heated debate. It became a social media sensation, sparking a variety of interpretations.

THE INVITATION

I don’t like to use ‘slow burn’ to justify any movie. But this one is the one as they will creep into you slowly and steadily till you feel the chill in your bones. This a great movie-watching experience that keeps you guessing and waiting for more.

I will not go further into its plot as it may spoil you more than necessary. The last 10 minutes of this movie is what makes it. Don’t watch any trailer or any videos before watching this movie. 

THE THING

Director: John Carpenter

The sheer thrill and excitement this movie offers are addictive. Carpenter finds a very nuanced way of storytelling that focuses on both the character and plot of the movie. And horror elements and the action part of this movie are a joy to watch and sometimes it may scare you. 

PLOT

The story takes place in an Antarctic research outpost. A group of scientists come upon an extraterrestrial entity that can take any shape. As fear and suspicion overtake the squad, they fight to determine who is human and who is the imposter.

This movie is full of suspense. The best part of this film is that, as the story moves forward, tension and thrill start to pick up pretty well. It has done well with cinematics and background.

This movie is a rollercoaster ride of thriller, suspense, exploration, terror, and insanity. It is a heavy movie to take in but as the movie progress this movie offers one of the most immersive movie experience. It explores the deepest and darkest desires of human beings and presents them in a very innovative way.

PLOT

Set in a near-future America, an annual event in which all crime, including murder, is lawful for 12 hours. The plot revolves around a family who becomes the focus of violence after offering refuge to a guy. As the night progresses, the family must defend themselves against masked assassins.

The film shows the Purge affecting different social classes, leading to tense confrontations. It creates an unsettling atmosphere and suspenseful scenarios. I found darker aspects of human behavior were well presented.

THE ONE I LOVE

Director: Charlie McDowell

Cast: Mark Duplass as Ethan, Elisabeth Moss as Sophie

This science fiction drama is a joy to watch. The plot is very inventive and immersive with very good storytelling with subtle characters that make you feel like they are your friends who are on their journey.

PLOT: Ethan and Sophie are an unhappy married couple. They attend a quiet retreat on the advice of their psychiatrist. They uncover a surprising twist when they arrive at a house. An alternate version of their relationship already exists in the house’s guest cottage. This version is having a flawless and idealized life.

Love, identity, and the difficulties of relationships are all explored in the film. Ethan and Sophie confront their own needs and insecurities with duality.

CANDYMAN

Director: Bernard Rose

Cast: Tony Todd as Daniel Robitaille / Candyman, Virginia Madsen as Helen Lyle, Xander Berkeley as Trevor Lyle, Kasi Lemmons as Bernadette “Bernie” Walsh, Vanessa Williams as Anne-Marie McCoy, DeJuan Guy as Jake

It is a thrill ride. With absolute bloody and gory action and thriller coupled with an amazing plot and twist and turn that will leave you guessing. It is one of the most influential horror movies that even inspired the director of Get Out. 

Before watching this movie please go watch “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. It’s a short film that inspired Candyman.

PLOT: A graduate student named Helen examines the urban legend of the Candyman. a malevolent spirit summoned by pronouncing his name five times in a mirror. As she digs deeper, she becomes enmeshed in a series of heinous killings blamed on the Candyman.

The movie explores themes such as urban mythology, race, and the power of belief. It investigates how the Candyman mythology mirrors society’s concerns. The unsettling atmosphere and Tony Todd’s portrayal of the Candyman is worth it.

Octavia Spencer befriends a bunch of adolescents and lets them party in her basement. Her motives, become evil as she starts to become possessive of the teenagers. As truths from her history start to unfold, the situation becomes a nightmare.

The film explores themes of loneliness and revenge. It also shows the dangers of seeking acceptance from the wrong sources. Octavia Spencer’s performance adds to her character’s disturbing transformation. There are some unnerving moments where you will feel electrocuted. Go watch it now and don’t worry, it’s only a thrilling experience.

Each day a platform stocked with food lowers from the top to the basement. As it descends, the quality and amount of food decrease. Now, individuals on lower levels fend for themselves.

The film acts as a symbol of class disparity, scarcity, and human nature’s savagery. The protagonists’ struggle for existence is a metaphor for society’s dog-eat-dog mentality. This is a movie that will change your views on many aspects of human nature.

THE BABADOOK

Director: Jennifer Kent

This is without a doubt a modern classic horror movie. The way it deficits the mental illness and adds a horror element with unsettling horror elements makes it an uncomfortable watch but I can assure you that this a must-watch movie.

PLOT

Amelia, a single mother, and her difficult young son, Samuel, are central to the plot. After reading a weird pop-up book, a terrible presence haunts them. It threatens their sanity and safety. Amelia must now confront her trauma and dark emotions to protect her kid.

Grief, parenting, and the signs of psychological pain are all explored in the film. Amelia’s unresolved grief and emotional troubles act as an alteration in the Babadook.

ANTEBELLUM

It is a mind-bending mystery movie that won’t let you blink or be focused on other things. The relentless horror and terrifying frames make a scary yet thrilling movie-watching experience. 

PLOT

A successful modern author and researcher catches a mysterious reality. The story alternates between two eras. One is set on a Southern plantation before the Civil War and the other in the present age.

As the story progresses. two timelines come together in surprising ways.

From my personal experience, I can tell you that it’s a little slow at the start. But as the timelines start to become evident, the movie starts to build up suspense and mystery.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Director: Drew Goddard

This is a wild wild ride. From the initial frame to the middle part, this movie keeps you guessing. The over-enthusiastic characters and the eerie atmosphere silently build up a horror atmosphere but as the film progresses the revelations and quickie horror with subtle subtext make this a great watch. 

PLOT 

Five college students decide to spend the weekend at a remote cottage in the woods. They become a part of a bizarre situation that follows well-known horror movie clichés. An underground institution is arranging their experiences. It is to fulfill ancient rituals involving death and horror. But the students are unaware of it.

The film takes a meta approach to the horror genre. It portrays humor and horrifying elements while deconstructing and questioning typical horror cliches.

NIGHTCRAWLER

Director: Dan Gilroy

What greed and hunger for fame and money drive a man crazy is the base of this wonderfully crafted movie. I was in awe with the character study of Bloom and left me wanting for more when the credit rolled.

PLOT

 Louis Bloom is a motivated character but has conflicts with morals. He stumbles into the world of freelance crime journalism in Los Angeles. He records graphic footage of accidents, crimes, and violent occurrences for profit. This passion draws him deeper into a dangerous environment.

Many interpret the movie as a gloomy satire of media ethics and desire. This movie is a horror version of today’s journalism. But I would suggest you watch free of these interpretations. This is a great movie to watch at night.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

Director: Boots Riley

Cast: Lakeith Stanfield as Cassius, Tessa Thompson as Detroit, Steven Yuen as Squeeze, Armie Hammer as Steve Lift, Terry Crews as Sergio Green

When I was watching this movie, I was participating in it. It was one hell of an experience. It’s a cinematic orgasm. It is an inventive and powerful movie that is visually appealing and gives us one of the finest movie-watching experiences.

PLOT

Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You” is a sarcastic dark comedy. Cassius Green is a struggling telemarketer who discovers a special talent. using his “white voice” to excel in his work. As he advances up the corporate ladder, he discovers his employer’s unsettling practices. This includes abusing workers in strange and dystopian ways.

The story gets weird as it progresses. It dives into labor exploitation, class conflict, and the consequences of greed.

THE CONJURING

When I heard this was a true story, I was sweating even during sleep. This should be one of the best horror films of the decade. The exorcism scene is very tough to watch.

The child actors in this movie are just brilliant and the director integrates their performance with a thrilling plot. The eerie atmosphere and the imaginative and horrifying images can shake you and won’t leave your mind even after the end credits.   

PLOT

 It follows real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. They investigate a haunted home occupied by the Perron family. As they investigate the mysterious phenomena further, they discover a paranormal entity. The Perron family’s safety is at risk.

The real Perron family came to the movie set. It delves into subjects such as faith, family, and the war between good and evil. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s powerful performances add to the film’s emotional depth.

ENEMY

The constant thought of ‘What is happening in this movie?’ never left my mind. One of the best directors of our generation, Villeneuve, grabs you by your hand involves you in his intricate and mysterious story, and lets you discover what the movie is about.

PLOT 

A college lecturer discovers his doppelgänger, an actor named Anthony Claire. Adam descends into a bizarre and terrifying investigation of identity, reality, and desire. Their life goes through a series of twists and entanglement.

The film explores issues such as duality, identity crises, and the subconscious. This Mysterious plot blurs the border between truth and fiction. It creates a tense and intriguing environment. Gyllenhaal’s dual performance displays the two characters’ unique personalities and psychological suffering.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

Have you seen ghosts in black and white images? Sometimes it is scarier than the colored ones. Directed by the great Romero, the unsettling music, characters, and horror will hook you to the screen, and scar with amazing jump scars. 

PLOT 

This thriller follows a group of strangers who seek safety in a rural farmhouse. The dead resurrect and begin to hunt on the living.

The film makes social criticism about racism and societal decay. The casting of an African-American lead, Duane Jones, was revolutionary at the time. This provided depth to the story. Also, it’s a low-budget film with black-and-white imagery.

THE INVISIBLE MAN

Director: Leigh Whannell

I consider this movie a modern science fiction class. Inspired by the old movie of the same name, the director weaves a plot with modern technology and inventive storytelling with a horror element is a treat to watch. This will scare you with its intense and psychological moments as the invisible man hovers in the background of the screen.

PLOT

Cecilia, played by Elisabeth Moss, flees her abusive and controlling boyfriend. After his suicide, Cecilia believes he has techniques to make himself invisible. This is now taunting her.

This movie mixes tension with real-life horror. It’s acclaimed for its great lead performance and ability to provide scares. Gaslighting and the trauma of leaving a toxic relationship are all explored in the film

GASLIGHT

Gaslight is an unpredictable and mysterious movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the initial frame of the movie. With its interesting characters, intricate storytelling, and shocking revelation makes a great watch.

Her spouse manipulates her surroundings, causing her to question her perceptions. So-called “gaslighting”.You will see new ways of manipulation. Techniques used to gaslight Ingrid Bergman is a ‘piece of art’ in this film.

MIDSOMMAR

This movie is going to give you a lasting impression. You will keep guessing how a peaceful movie turns into a series of conflicts and just a weird and absurd feast of your darkest imaginations. The imaginative and gory images, characters with absurd pasts, and religious and cultural rituals make this movie an absolute rollercoaster ride.

 A bereaved lady joins her lover and his friends on a journey to a rural Swedish village. They want to witness a midsummer festival. The peaceful event takes a dark turn as the group becomes trapped in the evil customs of the hamlet.

The film delves into subjects such as loss, dysfunctional relationships, and cultural clashes. And what a performance by Florence Pugh, reflecting the character’s emotional struggle.

SPLIT

A young woman has a sexual experience. She then becomes the target of a supernatural creature The monster can take many forms. To kill her, this monster tries to pursue Jay without any mercy. To free herself from this monster, she has to have sex.

The scary part is this movie portrays the director’s personal experience.

Let me warn you. It’s a scary movie that will frighten you. It also has sarcastic humor that is going to glue you for 111 min of its playtime. From over-the-top action sequences to loud jokes, and very weird humor, this movie will entertain you, scare you, and make you happy. Scream has a total of 4 sequels, the latest release was in 2011.

PLOT

Ghost Face is a masked killer in the first movie, killing his victims with sarcasm. He teases his target with phone calls. Sidney Prescott is the protagonist who becomes the target of the killer. She now has to find the killer.

You will keep guessing about the killer, until the very end.
