The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes explores the world of Hunger Games six decades before the original protagonist was put into the spiral of a sinister game played by powerful and rich people. This explores the life of a common girl from District 12 named Lucy Gray. But are there any similarities between Lucy Gray and Katniss Everdeen?

The prequel delves into the characters that are merely a part of the original Hunger Games. So, both characters come across the same characters in their path in different timelines. But it seems they both share a special bond and connection to the Coriolanus Snow but have a polarising opinion of him. They both are from District 12, and they both are very creative and resourceful in their time of need. 

Similarly, Katniss Everdeen sings Lucy Gray songs. Many theories and texts claim Katniss may be descended from the Lucy family. It is also believed that Lucy set a tone for the Hunger Games story. She impacted the overall lives of District 12 people and somehow incepted the life of Katniss also.

In this thrilling world, the mystery of Lucy Gray really shines on the screen. She inherently becomes the charm of the game show. She flaunts her colorful dress, makes her camera presence, and sings her melodious yet haunting songs that influence the fan.

Katniss Everdeen is the 76th winner of the Hungar game and Lucy Gary is 10th. Although they are in the same universe there is no direct correlation between them. In the  Suzanne Collins books also there is no mention of them together. But one thing is evident they have impacted the life of Snow.

But the ending of the movie  The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes hits about some connection but it’s just a theory. After the betrayal of Lucy on the Snow, he goes into the vast jungle to find her. But the snake bites him and he still lurks around. He believes he saw Lucy and shot his arrow. But we don’t know if she is dead or if she escaped. If she escaped, she may have gone to District 12 and maybe started the family. The open ending really opens the portal for the discussion.

Similarly, one theory suggests that Lucy can be the mother of Katniss’s mother or father. It may link these characters which adds more depth to both of the characters. Yet another theory is Lucy’s father may have another child in District 12. There is no mention of her father in the movie.

Looking at them as a character, there are almost no similarities other than their resourcefulness and their hunger to leave. One is getting sponsored easily but one has to make a story and have to be underdog to get it. One is good at influencing people and another is good at combat and believes in her skills. Lucy does not abide by the rule rather she waits for the opportunity to tell the world about the Hunger Games and Panem.

There are various speculations and theories behind the relationship between Lucy and Katniss. But let’s explore if they are connected to each other. First thing first, if they are connected then it adds cinematic and thematic value to the Hunger Games franchise. It will enhance the depiction of character and we as an audience will get involved in the world more and more. 

But the most important thing is the relationship between Snow and Lucy portrayed in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes reveals the ultimate hate and vengeful attitude of Snow toward District 12. Different aspects are mentioned and revealed in the movie for the hate and vengeful behavior of Snow but the main catalyst is the betrayal of Lucy. This incident made him get into politics and go back to the Capitol.

“It’s the things we love most, that destroy us.” This quote by Snow suggests the theory. So, it can be a factor in how Snow and Katniss come across each other in the later Hunger Games series. It will be one of the poetic cinematic portrayals in the movie. Katniss kills the powerful man who rose to power because of her ancestor or any connection.

The younger Snow’s fate was destined by the decision to leave Lucy and lend a hand to Capitol. So in a way, Snow himself can be the catalyst for his own downfall.

All of this adds more layer to the character and provide empathy and more connection to the character to the Hunger Games.

The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes Sequel Could Reveal Lucy’s Past

With all that to be said, we can wait till the sequel explores the past of Lucy and her family and her lineage. Here the book is yet to be published so we don’t know if the book or movie will explore the life of Lucy. So, it is on Suzanne Collins’s hand on how she wants to tell the story and explore the lives of her characters.

But the ambitious ending of The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes really sparked the curiosity for the Hunger Games franchise.
