Funimation Bids Farewell: A New Era for Anime Streaming

In a surprising turn of events for anime enthusiasts, Funimation, a stalwart in the world of anime streaming, is set to sunset its app and website services on April 2, 2024. This decision comes as a result of its merger with Crunchyroll, marking a significant chapter in the evolution of anime streaming platforms.

Founded in May 1994 by Gen Fukunaga and Cindy Brennan, Funimation Productions initially aimed to distribute anime content in North America. The company’s breakthrough came in 1996 with the release of “Dragon Ball Z,” a monumental success that solidified the company’s position as a major player in the anime industry.

Over the years, the application acquired rights to distribute iconic titles such as One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, and My Hero Academia. The company underwent several name changes, with its most recent being simply Funimation after its acquisition by Sony’s Funimation Global Group in August 2021.

The merger between this company and Crunchyroll was unveiled in March 2022 as part of Crunchyroll’s strategy to unify fan services. The goal was to provide users with an exceptional streaming experience and access to the largest anime library in the world. As a result, Funimation’s app and website services are set to sunset on April 2, 2024, marking the end of an era.

The users now face a crucial decision. They can either cancel their subscription or choose to merge their account with Crunchyroll.

However, it’s essential to note that digital copies of anime shows and movies purchased on the application will not be supported on Crunchyroll. Users who haven’t created a Crunchyroll account can migrate their account onto the platform.

For existing subscribers, the transition to Crunchyroll will be seamless, with subscription fees reflected in the next billing cycle through Crunchyroll or via Funimation. This ensures continuity in service and access to a broader range of anime content.
